Give What You Want to Receive

One of my favorite books is The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra. It is a lucid distillation of the spiritual laws that guide personal fulfillment. Among the seven laws is the law of giving. The gist of it is: give what you wish to receive. If you want opportunities, create opportunities for others. If you seek help and support, give help and support to someone in need. It may seem counterintuitive: if I lack something, how am I supposed to give it? The answer is to let go of your scarcity mindset and focus instead on what you have to give. If you have your breath, you can give.

Easy things to give: a smile, a “like” or “share” on social media, eye contact, the acknowledgment of a “thank you.” It doesn’t have to be the ultimate expression of the thing you are trying to give. For example, if you are looking for a new job, help a friend or mentee find a new job. You can start by mentally wishing them well. Then, think about people you can introduce them to. Start with any small expression … and build it up. Not only will you feel better, but you will attract more of the energy that you are putting out instead of a sense of lack. I recall fondly a boss and mentor from early in my career who told me that to be a great leader, one must be willing to constantly “replace yourself.” Give your knowledge and opportunities away. Do not hoard them. Why? Because giving will free you up to take on newer, bigger challenges and make space for new knowledge and opportunities.

I am loving the movement toward tiny sustainable habits and incremental change that is increasingly popularized in business and self-development content circles. Growth mindset + the law of giving = abundance over time.

“Generosity brings happiness at every stage of its expression.
We experience joy in forming the intention to be generous.
We experience joy in the actual act of giving something.
And we experience joy in remembering the fact that we have given.”
